For several years I had seen photographs of the Nelson House through the seasons, even with a blanket of snow. To me and so many other Oregonians, the image this house represented the stories of our pioneer families as they came in the 1800’s to settle in Oregon. Finally in the Spring of 2018 I was near the town of Dufer, Oregon and sought out to find this weathered but elegant Queen Anne Victorian. Tragedy stuck later that summer when the 36,000 acre Substation Range Fire swept through and burned all to the ground.
