Ref.#93 6618a ~ Eugene Lightning, August 1993
On a warm August day, Sandy and I went to the Lane County Fair. After partaking of our "annual" chicken BBQ dinner and exploring the exhibits we decided to go on the Ferris wheel. As the ride neared its highest point, we noticed flashes in the sky far to the South. After the ride we decided to go back to the house, get the 4x5 camera and head for Skinners Butte in the center of town. We got there ahead of the crowd and set up as the crowds arrived to watch the very active oncoming storm. As with previous attempts to photograph lighting, I stood on two thick rubber door mats, set the camera on the tripod, locked the shutter open and retreated to the car. After a several minutes the lightning struck from overhead striking points in the center of town. Soon afterward was a heavy thundershower. I waited until the storm passed and the lightning moved northeast and into the Cascade foothills. Perhaps I am lucky not to be struck by lightning, but I take many, many precautions.
