Ref.#98 9593 ~ Dewey Tavern c.1766, Bennington, Vermont
Initially, it was believed to have been built in 1764 by the first settled minister of Bennington's Old First Church, Jedidiah Dewey. Later it was determined Dewey’s son Elijah was the original builder of the Inn in 1771 when he was granted a plot of a little more than an acre. Dewey named the Inn "Dewey's Tavern". The Tavern was the site of many militia meetings including Dewey's own regiment prior to the Revolutionary War. The Tavern is also known by its later name ~ Walloomsac Inn.
We had stopped to visit and photograph the Old First Church and historic cemetery. On turning 180 degrees the Inn was magically light by soft sunlight. I quickly chose to photograph it before the lighting was lost.
