Ref.#06 2474 ~ Weaver at Padong Longneck Hill Tribe

The Padong (Long Neck) are a northern Thailand minority, and originally from a Myanmar hilltribe. The girls start putting the coils around their neck at around the age of 5, and add new coils every couple of years. There are many theories of why they did it, one was because tigers used to attack people of the tribes and in order to protect the weaker woman's neck, they used heavy metal coils.  No one really knows for sure, but it is a tradition they are still carrying on. The men do not use them because they are "protected" by special tattoos.
