Sensoji Temple and Five Storied Pagoda ~ The Sensoji Temple had its beginnings C.648AD in the village of Asakusa along an estuary in Tokyo Bay. Built by the third Edo Shogun, the Buddhist temple was built only to burn around 1600 then rebuild several times after subsequent fires. The last reconstruction followed the Tokyo air-raids of 1945. The five storied pagoda (also rebuilt) was first added in 948 AD. Viewed to the right is the Kaminarimon or "Thunder" Gate which serves as the entrance to the Main Hall. Lower left photo is the Demboin, the main residence to the head priest of Senso-ji and its garden, which only opens to the public for special occasions.
