Rinnoji Temple Gardens, Nikko, Japan ~ Rinnoji Shoyoen is a Japanese garden in Chisen Kaiyu style, which was made in the Edo period. The garden is located next to Rinnoji Temple in Nikko. The Rinnoji Shoyoen garden is designed to look like Lake Biwa and the surrounding scenery in Shiga Prefecture. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful flowers and trees throughout the year but it is best in autumn. Rinnoji Temple was founded in 766 AD by the Buddhist hermit Shoto, who first settled the Nikko area. A statue in his honor graces the temple park. Rinnoji quickly became a popular retreat for ascetic monks to meditate in the mountains, and it increased in importance.
