Ref.#07 8462 ~ Terra Cotta Warriors, Xian

Terra Cotta Warriors of Xi'an, Shaanxi, China ~ The Terracotta Army or the "Terracotta Warriors and Horses" is a collection of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China. It is a form of funerary art buried with the emperor in 210-209 BC and whose purpose was to protect the emperor in his afterlife. It is estimated there are over 8000 warriors along with horses, and chariots.  Each figure is unique. Only a portion of the army has been excavated, restored and protected under an enormous airplane hanger-type of enclosure. The figures, dating from approximately the late third century BC were discovered in 1974 by local farmers.
