Santorini is part of an enormous caldera formed about 3600 years BC. One of many islands formed as a result of multiple, initially submarine volcanic eruptions at the center of the caldera. The huge Minoan eruption of Santorini in the 17th century BC may have inspired the legend of Atlantis.
During the years of 1967 – 1974, a military government established their power in Greece. They set a political agenda of displaying uniformity across the landscapes. Therefore, stating a rule of re-painting all the houses in blue and white. Thereby, the towns started reflecting the colors of their flag. Even Santorini was re-painted because of the rule. Slowly it started becoming the trademark of Greece.
