This region surrounding Peacham became settled around the time of the American Revolution. Early farmers cleared the rocky slopes, planted crops, and raised livestock. The area gained prominence with the building of the Bayley-Hazen Military Road, built to move militia for resistance of British troops during the Revolutionary War. Although little used in the war it became a major inroad for settlers to the area. Common to the times military roads were built on high ground to avoid bogging down in the mud and ruts of the valleys.
