After an early morning hike to Sandy Stream Pond in Baxter State Park, we waited quietly in hopes a moose would appear somewhere on the large pond. Eventually a mother and a calf walked out right in front of us. Knowing how most wildlife were highly protective of their young, we consciously avoided any sudden moves. . . but they kept coming closer ! With my medium format camera I was able to frame them against Mt Kathadin in the background. I took several pictures. Then as they wandered toward my wife, Sandy, another Cow came out of the woods.
We soon became apparent that this cow perhaps had lost her own and had sights set on “kidnapping” the young calf. Mom reared up 10 feet in the air with fire in her eyes. She threatened to attack the intruder with her hoofs. The intruder retreated ! We have read about such interactions but never expected it to be played out 30 feet in front of us. Sandy recorded the whole confrontation with her camera, the sequence shown below:
