East Quoddy Light

East Quoddy Lighthouse was built in 1829 entirely of wood. It is located at the northern extremity of Campobello Island, (Canada), which is the largest of a number of islands in the area of Passamaquoddy Bay. The distinctive daymark in the form of a red cross has been on the tower since early days. It was placed there to distinguish the tower from windrows of snow in late winter and early spring.
While the structure has been re-shingled and painted many times, photographs show that since 1902, at least, the appearance of the tower has changed very little. The lighthouse is isolated from the mainland when high tide covers the seaweed areas in the photograph twice a day. Being near the entrance to the Bay of Fundy those tides change dramatically,
