Rose Blanche Lighthouse
Ref.#99 9768 ~ Rose Blanche Lighthouse, Newfoundland
Our first visit to Newfoundland was in 1996. From where the overnight ferry from Nova Scotia landed, a new road had recently been built out to the small coastal village of Rose Blanche. Brightly painted homes hugged the rugged coast. We followed a path out to a lighthouse. Harsh winter storms had taken their toll. The stone tower, built in 1871, was collapsing into a pile of rubble. As we wandered around and took photographs, we heard singing of young voices coming from the direction of the village. Soon a line of school children rose over the hill led by adults. We learned they were coming to celebrate the village’s plans to restore the lighthouse. Knowing of the success in bringing tourism to Peggy’s Cove in Nova Scotia, they had grand plans to bring tourism to Rose Blanche.
What a wonderful surprise on our return visit, three years later, they had realized their dream. Using that pile of rubble and the talents of local townspeople they had restored the lighthouse you see here.
