Ref.#04 4458 ~ Tent Rocks

What a strange land.  One feels as if they are in a fantasyland and expect elves to pop out from behind the turrets. The park is located on the Pajarito Plateau between 5700 and 6400 feet. The area owes its remarkable geology to layers of volcanic rock and ash deposited by pyroclastic flows from a volcanic explosion.  The last of a harder layer on top of the ash caused the “cones” as they eroded. The canyon cuts through the Jemez Volcanic Field that occurred 6 to 7 million years ago. Over time, weathering and erosion of these layers has left the tent rocks of Kasha-Katuwe. A 1.2 mile trail leads up through a slot canyon to a lookout point where the tent rocks may be viewed from above.
