I made my first visit to the Bisti Badlands in 2000. It is a fantasy land that nature has created with fields of stone mushrooms and hoodoos of all shapes and sizes. This sculpture of a “fish on a pedestal” sat on top of a small hill. When I returned to the Bisti area four years later the formation had dissolved into a small mound of sand. I was an impressive lesson on how fragile some of these formations are.
