The sandstone above built layer upon layer varying in hardness and color. These Petrified dunes were re-carved by thousands of years of wind. Softer layers eroded faster leaving ridges that accentuate the colors. Water erosion played only a very small part.
As of my last visit there was no established trail from House Rock Road (4WD) up to the designated wilderness area. A BLM day permit is mandatory to visit the area. From there a topo map or guide and plenty of water is strongly advised.
