Checkered Butte, Coyote Buttes
Ref.#93 6555 ~ Checkered Butte, Coyote Buttes
The entire area has several awe-inspiring geologic formations. Note the variation of colors in the various layers. Because of the fragility of the area, a special day permit from the BLM through a lottery process is now required to visit the area. The checkerboard pattern stems from the combination of cross bedding and joints created by frost wedging. Frost wedging occurs as water penetrates the Navaho sandstone and freezes. The expansion of water during freezing (8X its liquid volume) the ice pushes apart the rock to create joints. These joints run perpendicular to the cross bedding marks to create the checkerboard pattern.
