Pueblo Bonito,(Spanish for "beautiful town"), the largest and best known Great House in Chaco Canyon. Research of the canyon revealed the layout of the “city” was all based on the celestial alignments. It was built by ancestral Pueblo people and occupied by approximately 800 people between AD 828 and 1126. The pueblo was multi-storied perhaps four or five stories. The entire site was abandoned around 1200 AD thought to be from an extended 50 year drought.
At the time we visited Chaco, visitors were allowed to a trail on the top of the mesa which looked down on the pueblo. Because portions of the cliff proved unstable the trail was later on restricted access.
