Spruce Tree House, Mesa Verde
Ref.#93 6419~ Spruce Tree House, Mesa Verde
Spruce Tree House in Mesa Verde was constructed between A.D. 1211 and 1278 by the ancestors of the Puebloen peoples of the Southwest. Likely the site was abandoned after an extended drought. The cliff dwelling was rediscovered in 1888, when two ranchers chanced upon it while searching for stray cattle. Under a large natural overhang the site is open but well protected. The two circular rooms with ladders going down were kivas or ceremonial rooms. Fires in the center of the rooms would vent to allow smoke from the fires to escape through smaller openings in the ceilings. Although mostly gone now the poles in the wall beyond supported floors.
