The Columbia River Gorge is the remains of a lava flow that filled the ancestral channel of the Columbia River 14 to 17 million years ago. Through millennia and more significantly some 15,000 years ago the Great Missoula Floods significantly changed the landscape. Today the Gorge is the major passage, for all from east to west through the Cascade Range. On this beautiful autumn day it is hard to visualize the forces that carved this gorge.
