Ref.#77 1361 ~ Fort Rock
Very late day sun illuminates the remnants of an old volcano. Fort Rock is a volcanic landmark called a tuff ring, located on an ice age lake bed in Eastern Oregon The ring is about 4,460 feet in diameter and stands about 200 feet high above the surrounding plain. Millions of years ago the formation stood in the middle of an inland sea. Wave action from the sea cut into the granite walls leaving permanent evidence of such a sea. The ring is about 4,460 feet in diameter and stands about 200 feet high above the surrounding plain. Its name is derived from the tall, straight sides that resemble the palisades of a fort.
