Celilo Falls, c.1953
Ref.#53 0001 ~ Celilo Falls, c.1953
In 1953 my parents took some friends on a day trip up the Columbia River Gorge. I had a new Kodak brownie box camera, my first, which I got for Christmas. This photo holds a special memory for me as some years later in 1963 the sacred Celilo Falls were flooded forever under the backwater of the Dalles Dam. Thus ended thousands of years that many Northwest tribes congregated here to supplant their staple food, the Chinook salmon. In the photograph, Native fishermen wielded dipnets near the base of the falls, while risking their life on precarious platforms above the churning river.
Kodak Brownie Camera, Kodak B&W film (type not recorded)
