Formed in the vast caldera of an extinct volcano, Crater Lake is the aftermath of the catastrophic eruption of ancient Mt Mazama some 10,000 years ago. The original mountain was thought to be about 14,000’. The lake is 2000’deep at its deepest point and filled with crystal clear blue water. Wizard Island formed from subsequent eruptions within the crater. This was an early summer photo as some snow patches still linger.
